One person is dead and another in custody after an incident Thursday, Nov. 9, at Summer Wind Apartments, 1001 Linger Longer Drive in Summerville.

Dorchester County Coroner Paul Brouthers announced Friday, Nov. 10, the man who died is Charles Henry Crumpler, 51, of Summerville. Crumpler was involved in a fight at the apartment complex. At approximately 8:10 p.m. he was transported via EMS to Trident Medical Center for treatment. Crumpler was pronounced dead at 9:21 p.m.

The body will undergo an autopsy at 8:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13, at the Medical University of South Carolina.

The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office and Dorchester County Coroner’s Office are investigating.

Lt. Rick Carson with the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office said Dorchester Consolidated Dispatch was notified by citizens at 8:13 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, about a disturbance at the apartment complex. Multiple Dorchester County Sheriff's Office units responded to the call and, while responding, were advised the disturbance was now physical.

Deputies arriving on scene located one person on the ground with severe injuries. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to those injuries. Patrol deputies acting on information provided by witnesses took one suspect into custody.

Units from the sheriff's office crime scene unit and criminal investigation division took over the investigation.

There was no danger to the community, Carson said.
